Stopped by this newly (really newly) opened joint the other day and found it to be a sit-down restaurant rather than a more casual order-at-the-window type of establishment one would expect of a taqueria.
The decor and paint are done nicely with south-of-the-border “flavors”. There are two dining areas, one dark and cozy one brightly lit with a view of the outside eating area perched on a nice hill surrounded by mesquite trees.
Staff was friendly, although a little forgetful. I’ll forgive that since they are just coming up to speed on a new establishment, and will see how that works out in awhile…
Food, well… it will probably go over pretty well with the clientele I would expect in the area…tourists. Older tourists on their way to the country club, or out shopping for “authentic western” trinkets and art. For me, or anyone raised in the Southwest that has tried authentic Mexican food and been to some real taquerias (you know the holes-in-the-wall I refer to) it leaves a lot to be desired. It is plated artfully, and is visually appealing – just really lacks any true flavor. My tortilla soup was bland, bland, bland. My carne asada taco was charred nicely, but lacked any zest. The salsa provided was like eating tomato sauce. We asked for hotter, and were promised it – but alas, it never came. There ws no Cholula, or other table-type bottled sauce on the tables – and we decided not to ask.
The jalapeno quesadilla was large – 14″ or so, to be sure. Cheese was good, but the jalapenos were of the pickled variety. I would have preferred fresh. Speaking of pickled veggies, my taco came with some radish slices alongside some freshly cut iceberg. But, they were not pickled, like is common in those serve-yourself escabeche-type bars. They were also sliced at least the day before, and definitely not stored in liquid. Too bad. Either pickle them, or give me freshly sliced (or at least properly stored) radishes for a garnish.
Sure, I’ll stop in again to see if perhaps the “chef ” has called his mom and asked for her recipes – and if he hasn’t, well, I’ll leave this pretty little place to the tourists.
It is located at 37645 N. Cave Creek Road – Cave Creek, AZ 85331.
